The June Bug Carbon II

The June Bug Carbon II was the next iteration of the original june bug chair I created in 2021. The chair is a light weight carbon structure containing voids and negative spaces creating a lattice structure. The voids lighten the chair and also create an aesthetic that was very interesting to me and a great joy to work on. The chair consists of a hollow core and multiple layers of carbon fiber fabric and epoxy resin. The chair was inspired from the legs and forms of june bugs.

The making of

The process for making this chair was a very intensive and complex one. Design and 3d modeling was the most challenging phase. To achieve the forms and voids was extremely complicated and time consuming. The voids were meticulously modeled and the edges thought about obsessively. The next step involved 3d printing the shape in parts. These parts were sanded and bonded with special glue and putty. The entire shape was filled with body fillers primed and sanded for days. The next process involved making complex molds. Then the final carbon layup could be done in the molds.
