The Composite Cliff Dwelling, 2022
The Carbon Cliff Dwelling is a composite structure anchoring itself in a sea cliff and extending high up in the air. The composite structure would be made from a mixture of steel and fiber composites with lightweight core materials such as polyurethane and wood. Two large cavity columns collapse in from the exterior skin and create two large structural columns which hold the vertical circulation. People would ascend to upper level platforms for views through these. Large mullions are inserted into the composite structure and glass panels and railings could be iserted into large grooves. The composites industry is a very fascinating one because of the flexibility it offers designers. Complex shapes can be achieved through strategic layering and core materials can be placed only where the extra strength is required. Objects can be assembled in large chunks and redundant hardware can be eliminated with the use of composite tectonics.
